Island Gypsy
40 Europa
1989–98
The Island Gypsy 40 Europa is a mid-tier sedan cruiser with trawler-style lines and a traditional teak interior. She was built in mainland China on a solid fiberglass semi-displacement hull with a shallow keel, hard chines, and a relatively wide 14-foot, 3-inch beam. A pair of two-stateroom layouts were offered in the Europa, the difference being in the location of the galley and settee in the salon. Either way, the interior is completely finished out with teak cabinetry, and a sliding deck access door is adjacent to the lower helm. The aft deck, which is spacious enough for some serious entertaining, is shaded by the Europa’s extended flybridge. The decks and cabintop are teak as is the caprail, so she’s not what might be called a low-maintenance boat. Additional features include a gas-assist engine room hatch in the salon, teak and holly cabin sole, a well-arranged engine room, and a unique flybridge walk-through with fold-down steps leading to the foredeck. Standard 210hp Cummins diesels cruise the Europa at 12 knots and reach a top speed of about 15 knots. Larger engines were also available.
