Island Gypsy

30 Sedan

1975–84

Island Gypsy 30 Sedan
Island Gypsy got it right with the 30 Sedan, a handsome pocket trawler ideally suited to the retired cruising couple. She enjoyed a good deal of popularity some years ago when high fuel prices and the strength of the U.S. dollar combined to spur the importation of efficient Asian trawlers. Built in three different configurations, the Sedan model (pictured above) began with a mahogany hull and superstructure and switched to all-fiberglass construction sometime in 1978. The hull is a hard-chine, semi-displacement form with a sharp entry and a long, deep keel for directional stability and prop protection. Below, the space-efficient interior of the 30 Sedan features a surprisingly roomy salon with convertible settee, complete galley, and lower helm with deck access door. Teak paneling and cabinetry are applied liberally throughout the interior as it was in most Asian-built boats imported during the ’70s and ’80s. A flybridge overhang shades the small cockpit, and wide side decks provide secure access to the bow. A single 120hp Lehman diesel will cruise the Island Gypsy 30 Sedan at 6–7 knots burning just 2 gallons per hour.
