Island Gypsy

36 Aft Cabin

1979–89

Island Gypsy 36 Aft Cabin
A traditional double cabin trawler with walkaround decks, the Island Gypsy 36 Aft Cabin is built on a solid fiberglass hull with a shallow keel and a relatively wide 13-foot beam. The distinguishing features of this China-built trawler are her big cockpit and abbreviated trunk cabin profile. From the outside, the aft cabin appears to have been cut short in favor of a large cockpit; in fact, the aft cabin isn’t as small as one might expect. With her roomy salon and flanking aft stateroom berths (both extending beneath the cockpit), the cabin accommodations of the 36 Aft Cabin are spacious enough to meet the needs of most cruising couples. Note that the aft stateroom has direct access to the cockpit. The galley occupies the entire port side of the salon, and a deck access door is located at the lower helm. Both heads have separate stall showers—a real plus—and the interior is completely finished with an abundance of well-crafted teak woodwork. Additional features include a roomy flybridge, wide side decks, and a swim platform. With twin 135hp Lehman diesels, she’ll cruise at 8 knots and reach a top speed of about 12 knots. Later models with 225hp Lehmans top out at 15–16 knots.
