The first decision on a used sportfisherman is the layout. A convertible puts the helm on a flybridge with, as Boating's flybridge-versus-express comparison puts it, an unobstructed view to all 32 points of the compass, plus a protected salon below for cruising and entertaining. An express keeps the helm on the main deck a few steps from the cockpit, which suits owners who fish short-handed and want the skipper in the middle of the action, usually with a more casual cabin and a slightly higher top speed.
After layout, compare the fishing hardware. A tuna tower adds the elevated view that Marlin's tower guide describes for spotting fish and working kite baits, but towers are elaborate and expensive to add later, so a boat that already carries one is worth a premium if you need it. Outriggers are cheaper to add: Boating's outrigger guide describes them as aluminum poles from 15 to more than 40 feet that run lines from release clips to widen the trolling spread. Most used sportfishing yachts at HMY Yachts are 40 to 69 feet and built since 2000, Viking, Hatteras, Ocean Yachts, Cabo, and Bertram are the most common builders, and nearly half of the boats are in Florida.
