Sea Ranger
39 Sundeck
1980–89
There isn’t a lot to distinguish the Sea Ranger 39 Sundeck from the raft of other inexpensive 39-to-40-foot Asian imports of the mid-1980s. Like most trawlers of her era, she was built on a solid fiberglass semi-displacement hull with flat aftersections and a full-length keel. Sundeck designs like the Sea Ranger 39 are popular with those who want the added open-air deck space of a sundeck together with slightly enlarged stateroom dimensions. (The tradeoff for the full-width sundeck is the convenience of having full walkaround decks.) Note that there is no companionway from the sundeck to the salon; the entryways are the port and starboard salon doors. Inside, the all-teak interior is typical of Asian boats. Additional features include a functional mast and boom, teak decks, pulpit and swim platform, and a big 600-gallon fuel capacity (for an honest 1,000-mile cruising range). Twin 120hp Lehman diesels (or 124hp Volvos) will cruise the Sea Ranger 39 Sundeck at 7–8 knots and reach a top speed in the neighborhood of 10 knots.
