Uniflite
28 Salty Dog
1971–84
One of Uniflite’s more popular models, the 28 Salty Dog has long been recognized by marine professionals as a sturdy and well-crafted day fisherman. With nearly 100 square feet of usable space, she has one of the largest cockpits of any boat in her class. A fish box was standard, there’s adequate dry storage, and engine access is very good. Although the Salty Dog is rather a plain-Jane boat in her stock form, the addition of a tower and outriggers adds much to her appearance. The cabin accommodations are basic but still comfortable for an occasional offshore weekend. The berths are long enough for a couple of tall adults, and the mini-galley will handle some basic food prep. On deck, visibility from the elevated (portside) helm is excellent in all directions. The Salty Dog came with several power options including single and twin gas or diesel engines. A single Crusader 270hp gas engine will cruise at 17 knots (25 knots top). Twin 220hp gas inboards cruise at 20–22 knots. Following Uniflite’s demise in 1984, the Salty Dog enjoyed a brief resurgence as Chris Craft 282 in 1985–86.
