Uniflite
28 Mega
1977–84
The Uniflite 28 Mega is an old 1970s sedan cruiser whose enduring popularity with entry-level cruisers had much to do with her affordable price and spacious interior. With her wide 11-foot beam, the Mega delivers a big salon complete with a convertible L-shaped dinette with a facing settee. Most were sold with a portside lower helm, and large wraparound cabin windows admit plenty of natural lighting, which makes the interior seem even larger. The galley in the 28 Mega is two steps down from the salon level, opposite the small head (with shower). Outside, the cockpit area is on the small side but large enough for a couple of folding deck chairs. Access to the engines and V-drives is via removable hatches in the cockpit sole. Seating for five is provided on the bridge, although a prudent helmsman is unlikely to want that much weight topside in a boat this size except in very calm water. Additional features include cockpit railings, teak interior trim, sliding cabin windows, and a swim platform. Like many Uniflites of her era, gelcoat blisters are a common problem. Twin 220hp Crusaders cruise the 28 Mega at 20 knots and top out in the mid-to-high 20s.
