Albin
37 Palm Beach
1985–89
The Albin Palm Beach 37 is what is known these days as a “performance trawler.” Instead of riding on a semi-displacement hull like most so-called trawlers, the Albin 37 was built on a higher-speed modified-V hull making her a much better performer (with the right engines) than a traditional trawler. But her most notable feature is found below in her unique floorplan. Here, the master stateroom is forward and the aft cabin—where the master stateroom usually resides—is fitted with a U-shaped settee that converts to a double berth. This arrangement adds a good deal of versatility to the aft cabin which can serve both as a second stateroom for guests and a den for liveaboards or even a place for kids to play. A lower helm was standard along with port and starboard deck doors in the salon, and there’s also a door in the aft cabin leading directly out to the cockpit. Additional features include a centerline queen berth in the forward stateroom, tub/shower in the forward head compartment, wide (and deep) walkaround decks, and a teakwood cabin sole. Volvo 165hp diesels cruise efficiently at 10–12 knots (14 top).
