With her high-tech materials and state-of-the-art construction, the Intrepid 38 was the first Intrepid model to be built on the high-performance stepped hull design currently found on the entire Intrepid fleet. Often used in racing boats, steps are built into the hull to break the water suction, thereby increasing speed and delivering a softer high-speed ride. While the Evolution’s primary purpose is offshore fishing (she is still one of the largest dayboats of her type), she also makes a great play boat and, when fitted with an enclosure, is well suited for island-hopping. The walkaround deck layout will appeal to light-tackle and stand-up anglers alike. The cockpit will easily handle a full-size chair, and there are molded steps port and starboard. The helm is set well aft on the bridgedeck with lounge seating forward, and the entire bridgedeck can be hydraulically raised for excellent access to the engines. Belowdecks, the cabin accommodations are basic with a small galley, king-size V-berths, a stand-up head, and an athwartships double berth below the helm. Twin 400-hp Merlin inboard diesels cruise at 26–27 knots (about 33 knots top), and 425-hp Cat diesels are capable of about 35 knots top.
