Cheoy Lee Yachts
55 Long Range Motor Yacht
1977–86
This heavy displacement cruising yacht, designed by renowned naval architect Charles Wittholtz, can travel the world in comfort, security, and confidence. (Indeed, several Cheoy Lee 55s have circumnavigated the globe, albeit with increased fuel capacity.) Built on a solid fiberglass hull with a wide 17'2" beam, the standard 55 has full walkaround decks while the optional widebody version boasts an extended, full-beam salon. The lower-level floorplans differ as well—the standard 55 has three guest staterooms forward while the widebody has two, one of which is an enormous VIP suite. The master stateroom has a king-size bed in addition to copious storage. On the deckhouse level, the 55’s home-size galley is open to the salon in both models. Visibility from the private wheelhouse, with watch berth and chart drawers, is excellent. The standup engine room is accessed via the aft end of the hallway below decks. Like all Cheoy Lee yachts of her era, the grain-matched teak interior woodwork is precisely fitted. Most of these yachts have been customized to some degree, several with stabilizers and bow thrusters. Cruise at 8 knots (burning 6–7 gallons per hour) with twin 210hp Cat diesels.
