The 72 Convertible – A Viking Yachts Masterpiece
Since its launch several years ago, the Viking 72 Convertible has arguably become one of the most successful models in the company’s history. With HMY being set to deliver Hull #67 this fall, the results speak for themselves based on the model’s sales volume. The 72 Convertible is a wildly popular model for the sportfish market because of its layout, functionality, and most importantly its speed, as it is one of the fastest models in the company’s history under the right conditions. HMY has delivered numerous 72 Convertibles over its history and can easily determine that this model has not stayed stagnant over its history but continues to be refined as one of the most advanced sportfishing yachts in history.
The 72 Convertible has a brilliant layout that has helped set the standard in the industry. With a standard day head just starboard of the salon door, an open or closed peninsula galley layout that provides ample entertaining space, and dedicated crew quarters below with direct access to the engine room, owners and guests will feel the ultimate comfort wherever they travel on the 72 Convertible in its four staterooms, four head layout. With a 209 square-foot cockpit, the 72 Convertible affords ample space for all the fishing action, and most of the amenities that owners, guests, and crew would expect in a world-traveling sportfish. Options include but are not limited to, Cruiseair “Cool Breeze” air conditioning system in the mezzanine, an Eskimo Ice Chipper, a SeaKeeper 26 with a dedicated hatch (split or single) just forward of the transom livewell box, and ample options for livewell and refrigeration systems. The 72 Convertible is unique as it is the smallest model in the portfolio to accommodate the MTU 16V2000 M96Ls, which provide 2635MHP per engine. With this power package, the 72 Convertible under the right conditions can cruise in the upper 30-knot range and perform at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) in the low 40-knot range. 
HMY has the exclusive opportunity to present Hull’s #71 and #73 as stock boats, both to be completed in 2024. At this time, HMY plans to construct Hull #71 as a Snow-White Enclosed Bridge model with a Palm Beach Towers Gap Tower, and Hull #73 as a Snow-White Open Bridge model with a Palm Beach Towers Gap Tower. As with all HMY stock boats, the HMY Viking Product Team will take data from similar models under construction for retail clients, or recently delivered customer boats, to determine the full specifications for an HMY stock boat. Therefore, for both hulls, HMY plans on ordering a custom pantry layout that was installed on a recently delivered 72 Open Bridge that has been proven to provide extra space for storage and extra ease of access. In addition, HMY is considering adding the wildly popular CJR running gear system. With custom-shaped rudders and alternative running gear, the CJR package has proven to add several knots of WOT speed and extra fuel efficiency for longer runs to the canyons. However, the team is also considering some options such as classic gelcoat hull colors that have not been seen in some time like “Fighting Lady Yellow” or “Atlantic Blue,” and even the bold move to order hull #73 as an Open Bridge Hardtop hull (no Palm Beach Towers Gap Tower). As noted previously, HMY takes the décor process very seriously for our stock boats. While partnering with WBC Design, the team is considering a contemporary base color scheme of whites and light greys, but with various pops of color throughout.
