Sophisticated Exploration — Two Turnkey Expedition Yachts for Sale You Don’t Want to Miss

By HMY Contributor   September 14, 2021

Yearning to explore Patagonia? Or surround yourself in the splendor of Antarctic icebergs? Or finally be able to conquer a transatlantic crossing?

You should consider an expedition yacht, those unique breeds of luxury yachts that can safely travel long distances and handle extreme weather conditions while offering the same first-class amenities and accommodations as a fully loaded motor yacht.

Expedition yachts are powerful, rugged, yet refined, superyachts with deep displacement hulls and sturdy, commercial-grade construction so they can travel safely and comfortably in treacherous seas.

These yachts are made to reach the farthest reaches of the world, through all conditions and thousands of miles away from people, so they’re loaded with state of the art navigation, engineering, and communications equipment to ensure safety. It’s not unusual for an expedition yacht to have commercial-grade safety equipment and fire systems.

Rest assured, though, these are still luxury yachts — spacious interiors, beautifully appointed salons, impressive galleys, state-of-the-art entertainment, spas, pools, gyms, libraries, massive owner suites, large guest and crew accommodations, plenty of room for water and terrain exploration toys, dive gear, and so much more.

Luckily, HMY has two of the best turnkey expedition yachts on the market available for sale right now.

96 GLASSTECH EXPEDITION YACHT 2018 “RESET”

“Reset” is a 2018 96' GlassTech Custom Expedition Yacht designed for long-range cruising and explorations. Recently reduced in cost, “Reset” offers a range of 3,000 nautical miles at 10 knots with her reliable twin Caterpillar C-18 diesel engines. In addition to beautiful, spacious living areas, she also features a pilothouse with a full walkaround deck, outside wing control stations, commercial-grade electronics (including a Furuno WASSP multi-beam sonar with 3D mapping), and many redundant systems.

Overall, her previous owners invested nearly $7 million into the build.

The interior is the same you’d find on a large, lavishly appointed motor yacht. The 19’ 6” beam provides ample room for the same luxury accommodations. You’ll only know you’re on an expedition yacht when you step onto the expansive main deck.

Accommodations on "Reset" consist of 5 staterooms and 5 heads for 12 total guests and crew. This includes a full-beam, amidship master cabin with a king-sized bed, L-shaped seating, and en-suite head; two forward VIP guest cabins with en-suite heads; and two separate quarters for captain and crew with en-suite heads.

The modern galley is located on the main deck level and is loaded with professional level equipment like Viking and Subzero.
Other features include two Cummins/Onan 4 cyl 32 Kw diesel generators, built-in swim platform with removable stainless steel railings, and stainless swim ladder, and an aluminum dive ladder with rails. 78 JONGERT MOTORYACHT 1987 “FAT SHEILA”

"Fat Sheila" is a custom transatlantic expedition motor yacht with extensive updates and features, courtesy of an owner who maintained and upgraded her with an open checkbook since purchase. She represents a rare opportunity to purchase a world-class yacht of fantastic comfort and pedigree; she’s available at a very attractive price and ready to explore the globe!

“Fat Sheila” underwent refits in 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2021, so suffice to say her list of upgrades is extensive and the quality of her build is second to none. The engines are Caterpillar work engines, not typical yacht engines, and the generators are commercial equipment, running at 1200 RPM, not the 1800 RPM newer units do now.

Her knowledgeable owners made many fantastic upgrades and went to great lengths to ensure all of her systems are in top working order, going through the ship from stem to stern servicing and upgrading. All told, they put more than $1.7 million into making “Fat Sheila” the world traveler she is, on updates and upgrades on carpentry, electronics, power converters, paint, entertainment, flybridge enclosure, electrical system, generators, engines, refurbished teak decks, and a Naiad Zero speed stabilization system.

“Fat Sheila” can comfortably accommodate up to six guests in three cabins, including a master suite, one VIP stateroom, one twin cabin, and one pullman bed. She is also capable of carrying up to three crew onboard in separate crew quarters with ensuite head.

The master stateroom with ensuite head is amazing, and the master bath is huge with a Jacuzzi tub, dual sinks, and a large shower.

Other features on “Fat Sheila” include a large, comfortable aft deck, European style transom extension, and a massive fully covered flybridge with copious seating and centerline helm.

Ready to take your yachting explorations to new levels and remote locations? Come see what life would be like on one of these turnkey expedition yachts. Designed to give their new owners the perfect combination of luxury, comfort, space, performance, and adventure.
