72 Motor Yacht
The Hatteras 72 Motor Yacht was one of the Custom Series widebody yachts built with the wider 18'7" beam (most large Hatteras yachts of this era were built on the company’s standard production hull with an 18'2" beam). Designed as a crewed yacht with the privacy of owner in guests in mind, the spacious teak interior of the Hatteras 72 is typically arranged with the extended main salon separated from the wheelhouse and dinette (or optional powder room) by a sliding pocket door aft of the galley. A formal dining area is forward in the salon and a spiral staircase to starboard leads down to the lower level accommodations. The master stateroom and two guest staterooms are aft of the engine room, and the captain’s stateroom, crew stateroom, and crew galley are forward. The owner’s suite features a king bed, walk-in closet, and large head with tub/shower. The flybridge is accessed via a staircase in the wheelhouse, and the full-beam engine room is reached from the forward crew quarters. A small aft deck for line handling remains at the stern. No lightweight, standard Detroit 870hp 12V71 diesels cruise the Hatteras 72 at 15–16 knots (about 18 knots top).
