Hatteras Yachts
68 Cockpit Motor Yacht
1986–88
The Hatteras 68 Cockpit Motor Yacht is basically a Hatteras 63 Motor Yacht (1986–87) with a cockpit. Seven of these yachts were built before she was replaced in 1988 by the Hatteras 70 Cockpit Motor Yacht. The hull is solid fiberglass with a wide 18'2" beam and a relatively deep keel. The standard four-stateroom layout of the 68 Cockpit MY is arranged with the galley up, a departure from most Hatteras motor yacht interiors of her era that had the galley down. Separate engine rooms flank the corridor leading to the master stateroom that is larger and more expansive than any master suite you’ll find this side of a 70-footer. The extravagant full-width salon of the 68 Cockpit MY includes a formal dining area forward and lounge seating aft. A ladder leads from the small afterdeck to the cockpit with its lazarette storage space and transom door. The flybridge is huge with rear seating, wet bar, and double wide helm seat. Unlike many motor yacht conversions of her era, the prop shafts were extended all the way to the transom when the cockpit was added, a feature that ensures more predictable down-sea handling. Detroit 870hp 12V71 diesels cruise at 16–17 knots.
