50 Convertible

1980–83

Hatteras Yachts 50 Convertible
Introduced in 1980, this second Hatteras 50 Convertible (an earlier model was produced from 1967–69) was designed to handle the then new GM 8V92 diesels. Constructed on a beamy modified-V hull with balsa coring from the waterline up and a long keel, the Hatteras 50’s muscular lines were typical of all Hatteras convertible of her era. Her wide beam provides interior accommodations that are generous for a boat this size while still allowing the extra-wide side decks that many owners valued highly. Two floorplans were offered: a two-stateroom version with the galley down and a huge salon, and a more popular three-stateroom layout with a deckhouse galley. The cockpit—which is small for a 50-footer—came with a transom door, under-coaming air intakes, and direct engine room access. The flybridge, on the other hand, is huge with seating for seven. The original 550hp 8V92 diesels cruise at 19 knots (21–22 top) while the high-performance 650hp versions (introduced in 1982) cruise at 21 knots with a top speed of around 24 knots. Note that the more recent Hatteras 52 Convertible (1984–91) is the same boat with a bigger cockpit.
