Blackfin Yachts
32-33 Combi
1979–84
When Blackfin acquired the assets of Cary Marine back in the 1970s, included in the package was this 32'6" hull originally designed as a high-performance offshore racer. Long and slender with a drooped nose and low freeboard, Blackfin engineers took this hull, modified it for a sportfishing application, and introduced her in 1978 as the Blackfin 32 Sportfisherman. (Note that she became the 33 Combi in 1980.) Serious anglers were impressed with the fishability of the Blackfin 33’s large and unobstructed cockpit, and she soon became recognized as a rugged, hard-core sportfishing boat. Definitely a no-frills ride with a narrow beam and very low freeboard, the small cuddy cabin consists only of two 7-foot berths and a marine toilet. Used Blackfin 33s are found today with a wide range of power, including outboards. Big-block gas engines cruise the 33 Combi in the high 20s and reach speeds in the neighborhood of 35 knots. Optional 210hp Cat diesels cruise at 21–22 knots and reach about 25 knots top. Note that used models (at least those that haven’t been completely fished out) continue to attract a good deal of attention among experienced anglers looking for a fast open-water boat.
