Top 10 Features of the Viking 46 Billfish

By HMY Yachts   January 26, 2023

Simple, rugged, and loaded with personality, the popularity of the Viking 46 Billfish has only grown since her introduction in 2019. While smaller in size, the 46 Billfish does have the capability to run as far out as the canyons, but perfect for quick day trips in the Bahamas, Palm Beach, or the Florida Keys. With her open bulkhead design, fishing buddies can all hang together in the cockpit or deckhouse and still be a part of the group. The Merritt 37 and a few early Rybovich models were open bulkhead boats for the same reasons.

Here are ten key features that have driven the sales success of the 46 Billfish and made this such a popular model.

#1. Retro Styling

Just one look tells the story: The 46 Billfish evokes the classic day boatcharter designs of 1960s-era South Florida builders — a purpose-built sportfishing boat that stresses low maintenance and ease of operation. Sleek and graceful, the Viking 46 Billfish offers something unique in today’s sportfishing yacht. Styling-wise, there’s nothing else like her on the market.

#2. Layout

The Billfish appeals to anglers who will appreciate the practical advantages of an open deck plan with no cabin bulkhead. Instead of a salon, the Billfish offers an optional air-conditioned command deck with lounge seating for the whole crew — the kind of easy-access layout that keeps everyone outside and close to the action. When the Billfish was launched, she was described as the perfect fishing machine for inshore or offshore trips that an owner/operator with even minimal experience could easily manage.

 #3. Construction

The Billfish 46 is designed and built with many of the same mechanical systems, components and technologies found on larger Viking yachts. Throughout the boat, Viking’s meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail are on display from the beautiful high-gloss teak joinery, Awlgrip-painted engine room, and premium hardware and components.

#4. Accommodations

The classic day boat theme carries into the salon area with a comfortable U-shaped lounge (with a hi-lo table) across from a bench-style sofa. A centerline engine room hatches provide quick access to the motors. A large head is opposite the galley to port, and forward of that are adult-size over/under sleeping bunks. The private bow stateroom has an island double berth and large hanging locker. While the bow stateroom offers privacy, the midship bunks are open which contributes to the open and airy feeling of the Billfish interior.

#5. Galley

Positioned at the foot of the companionway steps where it’s easily accessed from the cockpit and bridge deck, the galley features an Amtico sole, and the countertops are colored Corian Carrera Crema . The space is also equipped with a two-burner electric cooktop, microwave oven, and undercounter drawer-style fridge and freezer. Storage in this L-shaped galley is excellent, more than one expects to find in a vessel this size.

#6. Cockpit & Command Deck

Always the center of attention, the spacious (140-square-foot) cockpit of the 46 Billfish features a pair of cavernous in-deck insulated fish boxes to port and starboard. Spray and sun protection are provided by the flybridge overhang. Notably, the 46 Billfish’s command deck can be completely enclosed and climate-controlled.

#7. Mezzanine Seating

Split mezzanine seating allows guests and crew to have an unobstructed view of the action. There are in-sole fish boxes under the cockpit sole which are fitted with a laminated plate for a fighting chair or rocket launcher. There’s also a standard bait freezer, tackle drawers, washdowns and in-transom livewell.

#8. Flybridge & Helm

The helm of the 46 Billfish is on centerline and has a teak pod with classic single-lever controls and optional air-conditioning. An acrylic helm dash with bocatech switches and optional electronic packages from Viking's subsidiary company AME, a pair of radio boxes, and more can be found in the flybridge. A Release Marine teak ladderback helm seat, as well as flanking lounge seats provide excellent observation points underway.

#9. Performance

The 46 Billfish is offered with four engine packages from three manufacturers, Cummins, MAN and Scania. HMY’s 46 Billfish arriving this spring will be equipped with twin 850hp MAN diesels, which top out around 40 knots. At 33 knots, the boat performs well with 60 GPH and a range of 368 NM. These numbers just provide more evidence that the Viking 46 Billfish is a great performer!

#10. Resale Value

A limited production model since her introduction in 2019, the resale value for the 46 Billfish have been impressive. Used models are scarce and the long wait times for a new 46 Billfish will ensure this model’s popularity and high resale value for years to come.
