The sportfish world is buzzing with anticipation as Viking Yachts and Valhalla Boatworks explore cutting-edge propulsion options. From high-performance outboards to next-gen V12 beasts, here are three engines revolutionizing power, efficiency, and excitement on the water.

1. Mercury 425 hp V10 Verado Outboard — A Game-Changer in High-Power Outboards

Mercury Marine’s all-new V10 425 hp Verado is expanding the top-tier Verado family with a staggering combination of power, weight savings, and refinement. In internal testing, it achieves a 0–30 mph acceleration 3 seconds faster than a 450 hp competitor while being 254 lb lighter—a massive advantage for performance-driven sportfish boats.

Additional improvements include a class-leading 150-amp alternator, 22% quieter cruising, and seamless integration thanks to a compact 26-inch mounting design inherited from its V10 platform. Features like Digital Throttle & Shift and optional Joystick Piloting make installation and operation smoother than ever.

“The new 425 V10 Verado takes high-performance outboards to the next level. It delivers outstanding acceleration, improved efficiency, and a lighter weight than previous models, making it ideal for center consoles and sportfish boats that demand speed and responsiveness. Despite the power increase, the engine maintains a compact footprint and quiet operation, allowing for seamless installation and excellent handling offshore. Features like Digital Throttle & Shift and optional Joystick Piloting give captains precise control in any condition.” — Mercury Representative

2. MAN V12X-2200 (2200 hp) — The Next Generation of Diesel V12 Dominance

Breaking new ground, MAN’s V12X-2200 ushers in the next era of marine propulsion. With 2200 hp from a 29.6 L displacement, this powerhouse delivers an impressive 74.3 hp per liter—a testament to its exceptional power-to-weight ratio.

Complete engine redesigns include upgraded ventilation, coolant systems, crankcase reinforcement, and a cutting-edge 2,200-bar fuel injection system. These innovations underscore MAN's commitment to durability and efficiency.

This engine has already made a splash—installed in the Viking 68’ demo, attendees were invited to “turn up your volume to hear the purr of the first-ever V12 2200X engines.”

“We recently introduced the new V12X 2200. We added the ‘X’ because while it remains a V12, it represents the next generation of engines. With this model, we increased displacement by about 5 liters, which allowed us to add another 200 horsepower. The real advantage is that our engineers in Germany achieved this additional power and displacement while keeping the footprint nearly identical to the previous V12, with only a slight increase in weight. For the sportfish industry, that’s a major breakthrough—more horsepower for greater speed, in a compact engine package that still fits within the constraints of a sportfish engine room.” — Jason Blume, MAN

3. MTU 12V2000 M96Z (2222hp) — Elevated Power Density for Fast Sportfish Boats

MTU, under Rolls-Royce Power Systems, is launching the 12V2000 M96Z in 2026, an upgraded 12-cylinder engine delivering 2222 mhp—a considerable jump from the M96X’s 2002 hp.

Despite the boost in power, weight and dimensions remain largely unchanged, preserving installation compatibility and space efficiency. Key enhancements—advanced turbocharging, reinforced crankcase, improved cylinder heads, and new pistons—ensure both thrilling acceleration and impressive reliability.

“The 12V2000 has evolved significantly over time. We first launched it as the M96L at 1,945 metric horsepower, then followed with the M96X at 2,002. Now, with the new M96Z, we’ve achieved an 11% increase, bringing the engine to 2,222 metric horsepower. Most of the improvements are internal—such as a larger bore that increases displacement by 4.5%—but the footprint, dimensions, and weight remain nearly the same. That’s a major advantage for builders who want more power without sacrificing space or adding significant weight.” — Andrew Boyer, MTU

“The M96Z delivers a much stronger power-to-weight ratio compared to the current product. With new turbochargers, an upgraded fuel system, reinforced pistons and block, and increased displacement, the result is higher horsepower, better performance, and exceptional reliability. Just like the M96, it retains clean operation with virtually no smoke, strong acceleration, and quiet running. Plus, it carries the industry’s longest warranty—two years standard plus ten more for a total of 12 years or 6,000 hours. We’ll be showcasing the engine at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, and the first units will hit the water in sea trials by June 2026, in time for the Northeast tournament circuit.” — Bob Shomo, MTU

Moreover, the M96Z supports HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) renewable diesel and meets emissions standards like IMO II and EPA Tier 3—a crucial advantage for eco-conscious high-performance vessel owners.
