Fish Tales and Boat Sales: Meet Tim Derrico and Dave Meyer of HMY Yacht Sales

By Katie Flanagan   August 21, 2023

The origin of both Tim Derrico and Dave Meyer's early stomping grounds in the maritime industry began in Jupiter, Florida. Their original introduction took place just inside the Jupiter Inlet at an old dock. Tim had started working in yacht brokerage and introduced himself to Dave, who at the time was running his family’s demonstrator boat in the local area. Little did they know that in years to come they would land themselves at the docks in Ocean City, Maryland with a qualifying billfish.

Dave Meyer would find himself working for a man by the name of Bob Bell. Bob Bell was the owner of the “Shamrock.” Bob Bell’s broker would only turn out to be Tim Derrico.

Bob owned several boats throughout the years, and over the course of eight years, Dave ran Bob’s sportfish in Florida, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, a vast collection of islands in the Caribbean, and the Mid-Atlantic region.

A few trips in particular have left Tim and Dave with vivid memories. One of those trips was a voyage up the eastern seaboard to the iconic Ocean City, Maryland. The “Shamrock” won the White Marlin Open in 1992.

The team at HMY Yacht Sales sat down with Tim and Dave to discuss winning this legendary sportfishing tournament. When asked if they thought they were going to win the WMO, Dave answered, “Absolutely!”

Tim Derrico said, “That day, I remember a lot, there was just something about it. We were on Bob’s 51’ Whiticar “Shamrock” and cruising at 24 knots. It was flat calm. We were heading to the tip of the Baltimore and when we got there, I remember exactly what Dave said just 10 minutes before lines in.”

“Man, it’s looking pretty fishy around here!”

Tim continued to describe the events that took place that day. “Opening bell, lines in, one bait in the water and we were hooked up... almost immediately!”

The team on board “Shamrock” cranked the fish in and into the boat within minutes of day one in the White Marlin Open! Tim shared that this event is all about camaraderie. With the excitement being palpable in the cockpit and the energy feeling electric, Dave looked down at the crew in the cockpit with the boated white marlin and Tim said, “I think we just won!”

The team headed back in towards the scales at Harborside Marina on the beach in Ocean City, Maryland to weigh their fish later that afternoon.

The white marlin weighed in at 80.5 lbs. Bob Bell was more excited than anyone else on board. He kept his boat in Ocean City and had fished the White Marlin Open for years.

“Truthfully, we were going blue marlin fishing. We were geared up for bigger fish that day- but as luck would have it- it was on our side that day. We were fortunate.” says Dave.

As time passed and Dave moved out from behind the helm, he made his way into the yacht brokerage scene with the help of Tim Derrico and began working for Steve Moynihan at HMY Yacht Sales.

Both Tim and Dave’s passion for the maritime industry has poured into their professional careers and taken both professionals to locations around the globe. Their wealth of knowledge and experiences now allow them to guide clients and friends through the buying, selling, and owning process of sportfish. Traveling with clients and making unbelievable fishing stories- this is just a part of how special this industry is.
