Buying A Yacht? 5 Features That Should Be On The Top Of Your List

By HMY   March 6, 2019

It’s commonly known that yacht buyers match their yacht to their lifestyle and purchasing a yacht is a very personal decision with so many influential factors that can dictate the sales process and buying experience. So, before you buy, what better person to consult than a yacht captain? Many times, they can be the bridge between what owners want and their ultimate enjoyment on the water.

The experienced brokers at HMY—many of whom are also captains—are well aware of this and they work tirelessly to ensure customers end up with the absolute perfect boat for their needs every time. HMY’s extensive yachting network also includes some of the finest captains in the world. No person is more intimately familiar with a vessel than its captain which is why they are a deep source of knowledge you should tap when wondering what the right move is for your next sportfish or motor yacht.

We caught up with several captains and talked about features customers absolutely need to consider before they purchase their next yacht. While the list is long, here are five features that should make their way to the top of your considerations, along with yachts that perfectly capture them.

BALANCE OF SIZE, SPEED, AND LONG-RANGE TRAVEL CAPABILITIES: VIKING YACHTS 93’ MOTOR YACHT

Sometimes prioritizing speed means compromises to yacht size and long-distance cruising capabilities. Not with the Viking 93’ motor yacht, the newest addition to Viking’s motor yacht fleet, and also the biggest.

The tri-deck motor yacht combines the performance of a convertible sportfish with the luxurious accommodations of a motor yacht. The 93MY is fast without sacrificing seafaring distance. Powered with twin state-of-the-art 1,945-hp MTU diesels, she tops out from 26.5-27.5 knots and cruises from 21-24 knots, with a range exceeding 400 nautical miles at cruising speeds.

And she is big, accommodating, and comfortable. With a 24-foot, 4-inch beam, the 93MY holds five staterooms and seven heads, two expansive salons and aft decks, a huge forward galley, 12 televisions, storage for a tender, and crew quarters for three.

ENTERTAINING: OKEAN 55’ SPORT

If entertaining is one of your primary objectives with your new yacht, look no further than the boat that’s turning heads throughout the yachting industry, the OKEAN 55’ Sport.

OKEAN’s 55’ Sport model is designed to be a day boat and is made for entertaining. The most distinctive feature on this yacht is the Open Up Your World concept, featuring the unique folding balconies which increase deck space an additional 6’1”.

Overnight trips are certainly an option on the 55’ Sport. Below deck accommodations include a spacious forward bow suite with queen bed, storage, separate head, and separate shower. This can be completely closed off for privacy by a pocket sliding door, which is also available in the 55’ Coupe.

The Seakeeper #6 is an option on the 55’ to enhance entertainment comfort, as is a sunpad that converts to a dinette.

Performance-wise, the 55’ features 800 series Volvo Penta IPS800 Series engines rated at 600 horsepower each. She’ll cruise at 33 knots and hit 41 knots at top end, making island or dock hopping quick and easy.
