West Bay Yachts
65 Motor Yacht; 72 Cockpit MY
1989–95
The West Bay 65 Motor Yacht and her sistership, the 72 Cockpit MY (the same boat as the 65 with a cockpit extension) are a pair of top-quality west coast designs from a builder well known for its series of semi-custom long-range cruising yachts. Built on a fully cored modified-V hull with a wide 19-foot beam, the 65 and 72 share identical four-stateroom, four head floorplans although it should be noted that variations of the standard layout were available from the factory. The galley is forward in the salon, and the pilothouse is a step up from the main deck level. An extended flybridge shelters the aft deck in both models and, like most West Coast yachts, the side decks are very wide. The flybridge of the 65/72 is huge with seating for a small crowd. Between the two models, the 72 CMY was the more popular thanks to the versatility that a cockpit adds to any motor yacht. (Two 65s and four 72s were built.) Standard 550hp 6V92s cruise the 65 MY at 16–17 knots (about 20 knots top), and the 72 CMY will cruise at 20–21 knots with standard 760hp 8V92s and reach a top speed of around 24 knots.
