The Wellcraft 400 Coastal was introduced in 1999 as a value-priced convertible with a large fishing cockpit and a roomy, well-finished interior. Built for Wellcraft by Riviera Marine in Australia, the Coastal rides on a solid fiberglass hull with a well-flared bow, generous beam, and a moderate-deadrise running surface. The standard two-stateroom, mid-galley floorplan of the 400 Coastal is arranged with a centerline double berth in the forward stateroom and over/under berths in the small guest cabin. A leather-upholstered dinette is forward in the salon, and beechwood cabinets and wraparound windows make the salon seem open and very inviting. On deck, the Coastal’s large cockpit is fitted with 12 rod holders, a tackle center, see-through livewell, fish box, and a transom door. A retractable sun shade extends out from the flybridge overhang, and access to the engine room is via a hatch in the cockpit sole. Topside, the flybridge has bench seating forward of the helm console. (Note that a hardtop was standard.) Twin 480hp Volvo diesels cruise the 400 Coastal at 25 knots and reach a top speed of 28–29 knots.
