It wasn’t that many years ago that the idea of a production 50-foot express fishing boat was little more than a gleam in some designer’s eye. Flash forward to 2006 when the Cabo 52 Express first appeared. A year later comes the Viking 52 Open, an equally broad-beamed sportfishing heavyweight whose luxury-class accommodations belie her fishboat pedigree. There are many similarities between the two boats—both feature huge bridge decks with center helm positions; both have enormous engine rooms; and both offer lavish two-stateroom interiors with two heads and luxury-class amenities. Only the 52 Open, however, has mezzanine seating like the Viking convertibles. Housing a freezer and storage boxes under, mezzanines offer the extra seating many owners demand these days for cruising and entertaining. Cockpit features include a large in-sole livewell, refrigerated step box, transom fish box, and a beefy transom door with gate. The 52’s meticulously detailed engine room is simply a work of art. Built on a modified-V hull with cored hullsides and a solid glass bottom, MAN 1360hp V-12 diesels cruise at a blistering 35 knots. A hardtop version was also available.
