The Ocean 53 Motor Yacht represented a big departure from Ocean’s tradition of building Jersey-style sportfishing boats. (Note that earlier Ocean motor yacht models were built on one of the company’s existing Super Sport hulls.) A true double-deck yacht, the 53 rides on a relatively flat-bottom hull with cored hullsides, a shallow keel and a very wide beam. Two floorplans were offered, each with four staterooms, a deckhouse galley, and a lower helm position open to the salon. Plan A has an extended salon, and Plan B shortened the salon in favor of a semi-enclosed afterdeck. Either way, these are impressive accommodations for a 53-footer with a full array of features including a full-width salon, laundry facilities, a built-in entertainment center, and a large galley. Curved staircases in the salon lead to the aft staterooms and flybridge, and port and starboard deckhouse doors provide quick access to the foredeck. Additional features include flybridge seating for a dozen, a well-arranged engine room with near-standing headroom, bow pulpit and swim platform. Twin 735hp GM diesels cruise the Ocean 53 at 24 knots (about 30 knots top). A total of 29 were built.
