It’s no secret that the addition of a small cockpit adds serious versatility to any motor yacht. Aside from putting guests and crew close to the water for swimming and diving, a cockpit makes boarding (and leaving) considerably more convenient for all concerned. Introduced in 1985, the Alexander 54 is a spacious, well-finished cockpit yacht whose unusual tri-level floorplan will appeal to those looking for something different in a cruising layout. The main salon is raised from the intermediate level where the galley, dining table, and lower helm are located. The result is an unusually spacious galley and dining area with a completely separate full-width salon aft. There are three staterooms on the lower level, and both aft staterooms share a common head—a rather unattractive compromise in a boat of this size. Note the quality teak woodwork, Corian galley counters, and hardwood flooring. A staircase forward in the salon provides easy flybridge access, and a small afterdeck overlooks the cockpit. Among several engine options, 450hp GM 6-71s deliver a 15-knot cruising speed (17–18 knots top). A sistership, the Ocean Alexander 50 MY, is the same boat without the 54’s cockpit.
