Introduced at the onset of the Great Recession, the Maxum 2900 SE joined over a dozen other express cruisers her size fighting for recognition in a very competitive—and fast declining—market. (Indeed, two years later Maxum was out of business.) Aiming for the right balance of style and versatility at the lower end of the price scale, the 2900 SE boasts a roomy cockpit with twin rotating forward seats and a three-position rear seat that converts to a sun pad. A transom door, removable table, and shower were standard, and a cockpit grill was a popular option. Below, the decidedly Spartan interior includes an offset double berth forward with privacy curtain, convertible dinette to starboard, standup head with shower, and fully equipped galley with microwave, stove and refrigerator. On the downside, the decor is plain and there’s little galley storage. The teak-and-holly cabin sole is a nice touch. A tight entry makes the midcabin berth difficult to access. In 2009, the 2900 SE became the first Maxum model to have Mercury’s new Axius sterndrive system with joystick controls. Twin 300hp MerCruiser I/Os cruise at 25 knots (low 30s top). Later models with the 260hp MerCruiser/Axius package reach up to 35 knots.
