40 Double Cabin
1974–85
Although she remained in production until 1986, the Marine Trader 40 Double Cabin enjoyed her greatest popularity during the fuel crisis years of the late 1970s. Trawler sales were on a roll back then as the public turned toward the efficiency and traditional styling inherent in such a design. The MT 40 has the proper trawler “look” with enough teak trim and interior woodwork to sink a lesser boat. Plus, she was very affordable when compared to similar imported trawlers available at the time. Inside, her total-teak interior is arranged in the normal double-cabin configuration with accommodations for six. The starboard-side galley has tons of counter and storage space, and port and starboard deck doors in the salon made getting around easy. (Note also the cockpit door in the aft stateroom.) Engine room access is via a hatch in the salon sole. Additional features include wide side decks, functional mast and boom, teak bow pulpit, and a teak swim platform. On the downside, window leaks and electrical problems are common. A single 120hp Lehman diesel will cruise the Marine Trader 40 at 7–8 knots (about 10 knots top). Twin-engine models cruise a knot or two faster.
