A distinctive design with a flush foredeck and Portuguese bridge, the 48 Whaleback is a full-displacement cruising trawler with a deep entry, rounded bilges, and a ballasted, prop-protecting keel. With well over 16 feet of beam and no side decks, the interior dimensions of the Whaleback are downright extravagant for a boat this size. The floorplan—arranged on a single level from the cockpit to the forward stateroom—includes three staterooms (one of which doubles as a den) and two full heads in addition to an expansive salon and generous galley. All of the cabinets, trim, and paneling are fashioned of grain-matched teak. The pilothouse, with its distinctive reverse-raked windshield, features full 360 degrees of visibility in addition to a spacious chart table, an L-shaped settee, port and starboard deck access doors, and a wet bar. There’s room on the extended upper deck for dinghy storage, and the mast and boom are fully functional. Note the protected walkway surrounding the pilothouse. At an economical 8-knot cruising speed, a single 210hp Cat diesel delivers a cruising range of approximately 2,000 miles. About 30 were built until production ended in 2003.
