A breakthrough design that led to many imitators in subsequent years, the Hinckley 36 Picnic Boat is a premium, waterjet-powered runabout with the right mix of upper-class elegance, innovative design, and leading-edge performance. Her fully cored vacuum-bagged hull weighs in at just 11,500 pounds, and with a mere 19 inches of draft the Picnic Boat can be safely operated in very shallow water. The long, open cockpit is an excellent entertainment platform (the centerline engine box can be used as a seat or table), and the semi-enclosed helm allows her to be enjoyed even in poor weather conditions. Below deck, the varnished mahogany interior contains a V-berth, compact galley, and a big head compartment—upscale, if basic, accommodations for a cruising couple. On the downside, the cabin headroom is a bit less than 6 feet. An extended pilothouse (EP) version with additional helm deck seating became available in 2001. The Picnic Boat’s powerful engine, bow thruster, and joystick controls make her extremely maneuverable at low speeds and easy to handle while cruising. Cruise at 20 knots with a single 350hp Yanmar diesel, and 22–24 knots with a 440hp Yanmar. Over 450 were built.
