The Hi-Star 44 is a generic Asian-built flybridge sedan whose conservative styling masks an unusually spacious interior. While Hi-Star never became one of the big-name Taiwan imports, their boats were notable for excellent engineering and above-average construction features. With her extended deckhouse and small cockpit, the 44 makes no pretense of being a fishing boat. Instead, the emphasis is on interior volume, and it’s no exaggeration to say that her two-stateroom floorplan is among the largest to be found in any boat her size. The galley is forward in the salon, opposite the standard lower helm, and the master stateroom is huge. Like most Asian boats, the interior of the Hi-Star is solid teak, which—by today’s decor standards, at least—is a little boring. A roomy and well-arranged engine room is accessed by lifting the steps forward of the galley. As previously noted, the small cockpit is better suited to the demands of cruisers rather than anglers. (The factory tackle center is small, poorly designed, and best suited for storage.) Topside, the large flybridge is arranged with bench seating forward of the helm. Cat 375hp diesels cruise at 18–20 knots.
