Hatteras updated several of their convertible models in the late 1980s, and the 55 Convertible was one of them. The open front windshield of the original 55 (1980–86) was glassed over in the new version, and the cabin windows and flybridge were restyled in keeping with the then-current Hatteras “look.” The basic boat, however—hull bottom, tankage, specifications, etc.—remained the same as before. Most 55’s were delivered with the standard three-stateroom, galley-up interior with amidships owner’s suite and three full heads. An alternate galley-down floorplan offered considerably more salon space, but a two-stateroom layout in a boat this size is always a tough sell. With her wide 17'6"" beam and hefty 70,000-pound displacement, the Hatteras 55 is big boat able to take on the type of offshore conditions that keep lesser boats in the marina. Her huge 158 square-foot fishing cockpit came equipped with a tackle center, bait freezer, live well, transom door, and direct access to standup engine room. The flybridge is huge with lounge seating for a small crowd. GM 870hp diesels cruise at 22 knots (mid 20s top). Optional 1,040 GMs cruise at 25 knots. Note that an all-new Hatteras 55 Convertible came out in 1999.

The Hatteras 55 Convertible replaced the iconic (but aging) 53 Convertible in the Hatteras fleet for 1980. Marketed as an offshore battlewagon with luxurious accommodations, the modified-V hull of the Hatteras 55 has a solid fiberglass bottom with cored hullsides and broad 17'6"" beam. Most were delivered with a three-stateroom teak (or oak) interior with the galley and dinette forward in the salon. The master stateroom is amidships to starboard with island queen bed (or twin berths that convert to a double bed) and ensuite head. A port guest stateroom opposite the master has over/under bunks, and the forward guest stateroom also has over/under berths. All three heads have shower stalls. An alternate two-stateroom layout has the galley and dinette down and a much larger salon. The cockpit has a molded tackle center, transom door and gate, in-deck livewell, and direct access to the 55’s standup engine room. The flybridge has two captain’s chairs and port/starboard seating forward of the console. No lightweight, standard 650hp 12V71TIs cruise at 18–20 knots (low 20s top), and 870hp high-performance versions—available from 1982—cruise at 22 knots (mid 20s top).

The Hatteras 55 Convertible (not to be confused with earlier Hatteras 55 Convertibles) is an updated version of the Hatteras 54 Convertible (1991–98) with a restyled superstructure and flybridge and a revised hull bottom with prop pockets. With her modern lines and large cockpit, the Hatteras 55 was designed for the serious sportfishing enthusiast. Her three-stateroom floorplan—nearly identical to the 54—features an expansive salon and dinette area with an L-shaped settee and coffee table to port and a U-shaped galley forward, also to port. Forward and down four steps are three staterooms arranged off a central passageway. To port is the master stateroom with queen bed and private head. The forward VIP stateroom also has a queen bed, and the guest stateroom opposite the master has upper/lower bunks. A washer/dryer is located at the base of the stairs to starboard. The accommodations are finished in high gloss maple joiner work throughout. The 157 square-foot cockpit came standard with a transom fish box, tackle center, and livewell. Topside, the flybridge has a pod-style helm console with power actuated electronics console. Cat 1,400hp diesels cruise at 28–29 knots (low 30s top).
