The Hatteras 52 Convertible is virtually identical to the original, poor-selling Hatteras 50 Convertible (1980–83) with the extra hull length going into an enlarged cockpit, a much-needed improvement. An extremely popular boat — over 200 were built — the 52 rides on a modified-V bottom with a long keel below and balsa coring in the hullsides. Two floorplans were available, a galley-down layout with two staterooms, and a more popular deckhouse galley arrangement with three staterooms. Both floorplans include two full heads with separate stall showers. A teak interior was standard, and light ash woodwork became optional in 1987. The large cockpit features a molded-in tackle center, transom door with gate, and direct engine room access. Additional features include a large flybridge with L-lounge seating forward of the helm, integral bow pulpit, side-dumping exhausts, and wide side decks. A good head-sea boat, the Hatteras 52 will cruise in the low 20s with Detroit 720hp 8V92 diesels (25–26 knots top). In late 1986, the 52 was dramatically restyled with a fresh deckhouse window treatment, solid front windshield, and a redesigned flybridge.

The Hatteras 52 Convertible built from late 1986 to 1990 is an updated version of the original 52 Convertible Hatteras introduced in 1984. Incorporating the company’s “new-look” styling with reworked cabin windows and a new flybridge design, the result was a more aggressive-looking profile to go with the 52’s already awesome offshore reputation. Built on a solid fiberglass hull with a wide 16'4"" beam, Hatteras offered the 52 with a choice of interiors with the three-stateroom layout proving the more popular. In this floorplan, the galley (with standard Sub-Zero refrigeration) and dinette are forward in the salon, and the amidships master stateroom was offered with twin single beds or a walkaround queen. Both heads have separate stall showers, and a stackable washer/dryer is located in the galley. The big 153 square-foot cockpit of the Hatteras 52 includes a bait and tackle center, freezer, removable fish box, in-sole bait well, heavy-duty 30"" transom door, and direct access to the engine room. Topside, a U-shaped lounge can seat 6–8 people. The wide side decks make bow access easy and secure. GM 720hp 8V92 diesels cruise in the low-to-mid 20s (26–28 knots wide open).
