Hatteras nailed it in 1991 with the introduction of the 50 Convertible, the third 50-foot convertible produced by Hatteras over the years. Indeed, she turned out to be a proven tournament contender—a sportfishing icon against which other boats in her class were often judged. The Hatteras 50 was heavily built on a low-deadrise, modified-V hull with a wide beam and a fairly deep keel. Her standard three-stateroom, galley-up interior has an amidships master, two full heads, and a low-profile galley with under-counter refrigeration. For those who prefer a more expansive salon, an optional midlevel galley, available after 1997, moved the galley down. The cockpit is among the largest to be found in a 50-foot convertible. No lightweight, huge 12-cylinder diesels were required to deliver the performance expected of a modern 50-foot convertible. Early models with 1,080hp GM 12V92s cruise at 26 knots (30+ knots top). Later models with 1,400hp Cats—huge engines for a boat this size—will cruise at a fast 33 knots (high 30s top). A strong selling boat for Hatteras, in 1999 the styling was updated to keep up with the competition from Viking Yachts.

Introduced in 1980, this second Hatteras 50 Convertible (an earlier model was produced from 1967–69) was designed to handle the then-new GM 8V92 diesels. Constructed on a beamy modified-V hull with balsa coring from the waterline up and a long keel, the Hatteras 50’s muscular lines were typical of all Hatteras convertible of her era. Her wide beam provides interior accommodations that are generous for a boat this size while still allowing the extra-wide side decks that many owners valued highly. Two floorplans were offered: a two-stateroom version with the galley down and a huge salon, and a more popular three-stateroom layout with a deckhouse galley. The cockpit—which is small for a 50-footer—came with a transom door, under-coaming air intakes, and direct engine room access. The flybridge, on the other hand, is huge with seating for seven. The original 550hp 8V92 diesels cruise at 19 knots (21–22 top) while the high-performance 650hp versions (introduced in 1982) cruise at 21 knots with a top speed of around 24 knots. Note that the more recent Hatteras 52 Convertible (1984–91) is the same boat with a bigger cockpit.

Aside from the “new look” window and flybridge styling, there is little to differentiate the Hatteras 50 Convertible pictured here from her predecessor, the well regarded Hatteras 50 Convertible produced from 1991 to 1998. Both boats share identical specifications, and the floorplans of the original Hatteras 50 were carried over to the new model with only minor decor updates. The standard three-stateroom interior — with high-gloss cherry (or maple) cabinets, leather upholstery, and an expansive salon with dinette and low-profile galley forward — provides the right mix of comfort and luxury for extended cruising. The master stateroom is amidships with walkaround queen bed, hanging locker, and ensuite head. The forward VIP stateroom has a centerline island berth and direct access to the second head, and the second guest stateroom to port features upper/lower berths, space for a washer/dryer, and private head access. A two-stateroom layout with a mid-level galley and enlarged salon was optional. The huge cockpit of the Hatteras 50 came standard with bait and tackle center, in-deck fish box, bait freezer, transom door and gate, and engine room access door. Cat 1400hp 3412 diesels cruise at 27–28 knots (mid 30s top).
