The Formula 280 Sun Sport is a deluxe day cruiser for those who want a boat long on cockpit space, handling qualities and workmanship. By any standard, the 280 is a handsome boat and her wraparound windshield and colorful hull graphics only add to her sportboat appeal. With seating for eight, the cockpit is definitely the star attraction of the Sun Sport. Aside from the big U-shaped lounge aft (which converts into a massive sun pad), there’s a doublewide seat at the helm and a settee opposite. The on-deck galley makes a lot of sense on a boat like this, and there are many cockpit storage areas including fender storage under the settee. Lacking side decks, a walk-through windshield provides foredeck access, and the engine compartment (under the sun pad) is reached via a motorized hatch lift. Below deck, the V-shaped dinette converts into a double berth, and an enclosed head comes with a portable toilet. Among several single or twin sterndrive options, a single 310hp MerCruiser Bravo III engine will cruise the 280 Sun Sport at 21–22 knots (about 37 knots top), and twin 320hp MerCruisers cruise at 28 knots (mid 40 top).
