Chris Craft got it right with the 40 Roamer (called the 43 Roamer in 200304), a modern-day classic whose stunning lines and many custom features make her a traffic-stopper anywhere she goes. As Boating Magazine wrote at her introduction in 2003, the new Roamer 40 harks back to those halcyon days of mahogany planking, brass fixtures, and Gray Marine engines. True enough: with her retro lookincluding the flared bow and foredeck rumble seatthe Roamer is nothing if not distinctive. Stepping into the oversize cockpit with its beautiful teak sole and posh lounge seating, everything about the Roamer feels elegant and romantic. The exquisite detailing of the galley, heads, and staterooms complements the main cabin's efficient use of space. The salon is very roomy with cherrywood joinery and designer fixtures throughout. Stainless-steel-framed windows run the entire length of the cabin. The side decks are wide, and the hardtop was standard. On the downside, the engine room is a very tight fit. Originally powered with 420hp inboards (about 35 knots top), Volvo IPS gas or diesel pod drives (with joystick controls) became standard in 2006.
