Cape Dory got it right with the 28 Open, a full-keel Down East fisherman whose lobster-boat lines and quality construction continue to attract boating enthusiasts long after the last hull was delivered in 1990. Boasting a large, uncluttered cockpit with a flush engine hatch, the 28 Open features the same quality joiner work and accommodations below as the 28 Flybridge Cruiser. Her semi-displacement hull has a full keel and molded-in skegcomplete protection for the rudder and prop. (The hull bottom is solid fiberglass and the hullsides are balsa cored.) A tall, teak-framed windshield with opening panels surrounds the helm deck where visibility from the two pedestal seats is good in all directions. Below, the compact interior features a small galley with sink and refrigerator, enclosed head with shower, teak-and-holly cabin sole, and adult-sized V-berths forward. The cockpit is big enough for two busy anglers and their gear or 46 deck chairs for cruising. Wide side decks are a plus. Reputed to be a wet ride when the seas pick up (note the spray rail), the Cape Dory 28 Open will cruise at 1214 knots with single 200hp Volvo diesel (about 15 knots top).
