A heavily built yacht with spacious accommodations and traditional flush-deck styling, the Bertram 46 Motor Yacht was designed for yachtsmen who placed a premium on solid construction and exceptional seakeeping qualities. She was built on the same solid fiberglass hull used in the production of the Bertram 46 Convertible, and it’s notable the Bertram 46 remains one of the few deep-V motor yachts ever produced by a major American manufacturer. Her standard two-stateroom floorplan featured a very spacious salon with the galley and dinette down and a tub/shower in the aft head. Sliding panels convert the dinette area opposite the galley into private sleeping quarters. One of the nice features of a flush-deck yacht is that the skipper stays close to his guests when piloting from the semi-enclosed lower helm position. By today’s motor yacht standards, the flybridge is very small. Design changes included a stall shower added in the forward head in 1977, an updated teak interior in 1982, and a queen berth (previously optional) in the master stateroom in 1986. Standard 435hp Detroit 8V71 diesels cruise the Bertram 46 at 19–20 knots. Optional 570hp 8V92s (offered after 1980) cruise at 20–22 knots.
