Flush deck motor yachts like the Bertram 42with the lower helm forward on the semi-enclosed aft deckare seldom seen these days, but back in the 1970s this was the way most motor yachts were designed. With her traditional lines and solid fiberglass construction, the Bertram 42 is one of the few motor yachts her size built on a deep-V hullthe same hull used in the production of the Bertram 42 Convertible. By todays standards, the interior floorplan of the 42 is very unusual; the mid-level galley is forward with a hallway to starboard opening to the forward cabin with private head and shower. Aft of the salon is the full beam master stateroom with two single beds, private head and shower, vanity, and large hanging lockers. A teak interior became standard in 1983 (replacing the original simulated mica woodwork), and a queen berth replaced the single beds in the master stateroom in 1986. Topside, the flybridge is tiny. With her proven deep-V hull, the Bertram 42 can handle sea conditions that keep other motor yachts her size in port. Although gas engines were standard, most 42s were sold with Detroit 335hp 6-71 diesels (1416 knots cruise) or 435hp 6-71s (about 20 knots cruise).
