Seafaring in Style: What to Know About Chartering a Luxury Yacht
For the refined traveler seeking a world beyond five-star resorts, chartering a luxury yacht unlocks novel opportunities at sea. More than just a getaway, chartering is an immersion into a lifestyle in which each detail is meticulously crafted to your desires — where luxury, privacy, and adventure converge.
Whether you’re envisioning gourmet sunset dining in the serene bays of the Bahamas or Caribbean, seeking new thrills while speeding around on a jet ski or flying high on a fly board, romantic seclusion in an exotic cove, or perhaps a little bit of everything, expect to have your every whim fulfilled with HMY’s world class charter vacations.
Here, we’ve compiled a list of common questions we encounter from first-time chartering clients so you can get a peek into the pampering that awaits.
What can I expect when chartering a luxury yacht? What does the yacht charter experience entail?
A charter vacation affords you and your fellow guests the ultimate level of freedom and flexibility. With unlimited mobility, some of the world’s most exclusive destinations are within reach. From the Bahamas, Caribbean to the U.S. Virgin Islands, Mediterranean, and beyond, HMY’s boutique charter program has a fleet of outstandingly appointed yachts to get you there.
At the heart of your five-star experience is unwavering care from an attentive crew, with every aspect of your trip designed around your preferences. Expect to indulge in exquisite cuisine prepared each day by an onboard chef. Based on your requests, the captain and crew will also collaborate to provide curated experiences such as snorkeling, private beach picnics, sightseeing, or any other memory-making activities you have in mind.
What are the roles of the captain and crew on a charter yacht?
While the size and scope of each crew varies from one vessel to the next, there’s one common thread across every HMY yacht charter vacation: dedication to your satisfaction, beginning before you even step aboard. On TAIL LIGHTS, a 116’ Azimut Grande Motor Yacht and one of our most-requested charter vessels, there are six crew members in total. Each is integral to shaping an unforgettable experience in their own unique ways:
- A captain who oversees operations during and leading up to the charter vacation
- A chef, who handles provisioning, menu creation, and meal preparation in the galley
- A chief stewardess, who assists in planning menus and meal services as well as interior upkeep
- A first mate who is second in command and ensures the exterior, engine room, and toys are functioning properly and in pristine condition
- A second stewardess who reports to the chief stewardess and assists with housekeeping, bartending, and excursion themes
- A deck engineer who reports to the first mate and is responsible for maintenance activities on deck and other backend tasks
With these multiple expert crew members on board, you can expect a superior level of service for the duration of your vacation.
Can I customize the itinerary?
Yes — and according to TAIL LIGHTS Captain Sean Kampfer, the more you can share about your wishes, the better. You’ll have the opportunity to describe your ideal itinerary and more on a pre-charter preference sheet, which will be provided four to six weeks in advance. Whether you’re a planner or someone who enjoys a more unstructured itinerary, here are some examples to inspire you
- Island tours
- Snorkeling
- Beach picnics and dinners
- Casinos
- Sightseeing through historic towns
- Watersports
- Fishing
- Elite shopping experiences
- Anchoring and taking in breathtaking views
Even if you’re a seasoned traveler, having so many options available may leave you unsure of where to start. If that’s the case, Captain Sean has a baseline sample itinerary to guide you, which can be modified to particular tastes — and rest assured that changing plans while you’re at sea is certainly welcome. “We cater to what you want to do,” says Captain Sean, “whether that means moving early or staying somewhere longer. It’s your boat for the week.”
On that note, most charter vacations span seven nights. Shorter trips are possible, such as four or five nights, and are dependent on availability.
What are the food and beverage options onboard?
You name it. With advanced notice prior to provisioning, any request — from surf and turf to specific cocktail garnishes — can be accommodated to ensure your delight. Your preference sheet will also give you the option to choose among dining arrangements, including formal, informal, or a combination of both, as well as any dislikes the chef should avoid. Of course, allergies and special dietary requirements will be accommodated as well. (For more details about what to expect when dining on a luxury yacht, see our recent feature on private chef Abby Cheshire.)
Are there activities and equipment available?
From snorkeling equipment to rigid inflatables, fishing gear, and a long list of sea toys, there’s no shortage of equipment available on board. Jet skis, wake boards, fly boards, and similar gear await thrill seekers. You’ll have your choice of slower-paced activities, too: according to Captain Sean, floating cabanas are especially popular among guests. Land equipment is also at your disposal, including beach chairs, cornhole, and even Segway scooters. If you have a specific preference, be sure to mention it on your sheet, and if space allows it, the crew will be sure to include it.
How many guests can we have on board?
Whether you’re planning to travel with family, friends, or a combination of both, up to 12 guests total can be accommodated on a private charter yacht.
Is there anything else I should know before I book a yacht charter vacation?
While this vacation is entirely yours to enjoy, there are some etiquette considerations to bear in mind. Guests are expected to follow instructions outlined during the on-board safety briefing. Additionally, gratuity of 15 to 20 percent of the gross charter fee is customary.
