It was back in 1975 that Steve Moynihan first broke into the marine industry with a position at a yacht multiple listing firm. His first week on the job was at the Miami Boat Show. Steve’s position at the MLS eventually opened doors into yacht brokerage and then in 1977 when the license law required applicants to be 21 years old, Steve started a career in yacht sales. In just two short years, Steve cofounded HMY Yacht Sales, and today, is the sole owner. “I wasn’t nervous about going on my own,” he quips. “I didn’t know any better.”
The family owned business has flourished into one of the largest yacht brokerage companies in the world and now has 12 sales locations, 4 services locations, and a team of over 90 dedicated sales, support, and service people.
Steve lives in Jupiter, Florida with his wife Faith and now has four adult daughters and a whole lot of grandchildren. The family atmosphere is what attracts many yacht brokers to HMY. Many of the brokers here grew up in family owned marine businesses whether yacht builders, captains, or dealers and naturally gravitate towards the same kind of company. It means a lot to our team to work at a company where loyalty and respect for one another has not been replaced by profit margins and it shows to our customers who continue their boating relationship with HMY year after year.
When looking back at the biggest milestone in the company’s history, Steve points to the commitment made to broaden our reach into new yacht sales. “We took our successful brokerage platform and expanded it to include new yachts after customers expressed an interest in HMY Yachts guiding them through the new boat market and building process.” Today, HMY Yachts is proud to represent five of the highest quality manufacturers in the world including Viking Yachts, Princess Yachts, and Cruisers Yachts.
