The Hydra-Sports story began in 1973 when Joe Reese, an avid Tennessee angler, began building bass boats in Smyrna, TN. Following an ownership change in 1974, Hydra-Sports enjoyed a period of rapid growth, becoming a well-known brand in sportfishing circles by the mid 1980s. During the 1990’s Hydra-Sports expanded into the offshore market with a line of center console fishing boats. In 2001, Hydra-Sports was acquired by boating conglomerate Genmar Industries and production shifted to Sarasota, FL. Walkaround cabin models were introduced in 1999, and the following year saw the launch of the acclaimed Vector series whose Kevlar-reinforced hulls were an industry first. With Genmar’s bankruptcy in 2010, Hydra-Sports was purchased by MasterCraft Boats and production relocated to Vonore, TN. In 2012, Hydra-Sports Fishing Boats transitioned to Hydra-Sports Custom Boats after its acquisition by long-time dealer Plantation Boat Mart & Marina in South Florida. In 2018, Hydra-Sports Boats was reorganized as HCB Yachts whose portfolio was soon to include what is now (2021) the world’s largest center console yacht, the 65-foot Estrella.
