We caught up with Tom Bzura to talk all things Silver Sailfish Derby!!

We're here with Tom Mazura, Director of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club. The Silver Sailfish Derby is just around the corner. What makes this event so special? Well, it's the world's oldest sailfish tournament. It started in 1935, and that's exactly when this incredible silver sculpture was created. It's called the Ray Trophy, and we still award it today in the tournament. It's our 89th annual year doing the derby, and this will be awarded to the individual angler who catches and releases the most sailfish throughout the tournament. That's incredible. What a prize. Why is this tournament so important to the club and the community as a whole? Yeah, so the tournament was used to bring people to the Palm Beaches following the Great Depression. So the West Palm Beach Fishing Club and the Silver Sailfish Derby were a civic antidote to the area, bringing people down. A lot came just for the tournament, just for the fishery. And when they came to the area, they liked what they saw, and a lot of them stuck around. That's awesome. That's really incredible. What can people expect this year for the tournament? Yeah, well, hopefully good fishing. You know, the weather can cool off. It's the height of the sailfish season. With live baits in the water, they can expect multiple fish at one time and maybe 10-plus fish days. We look forward to following along as this tournament plays out.
