40 Convertible

1973–82

Viking Yachts 40 Convertible
A major sales success with over 400 sold during her decade of production, the 40 Sedan contributed mightily to Viking’s reputation as a quality East Coast builder. (Indeed, only the Viking 35 Convertible had a longer production run than the 40 Sedan.) Boasting an aggressive profile and rugged hull construction, the Viking 40’s cockpit and interior are big for a 40-footer. Notable, too, are the balsa-cored hullsides; in fact, the Viking 40 was one of the early production boats to pioneer this technology. Steel engine mounts were also employed, which have now become a Viking trademark. Three interior layouts were offered with the differences affecting only the lower living area. Early models featured a simulated-wood laminate interior, but in 1982 Viking switched to a more luxurious teak interior. Another update (this one in 1980) moved the generator from under the cockpit to the engine room. Gas power was standard, but most Viking 40 Sedans were equipped with one of several diesel options. The popular 310hp J&T 6-71Ns and 300hp Cats cruise around 20 knots (23–24 knots top), and a pair of 410hp 6-71TIs cruise at 23 knots (26 knots top).
