Introduced in 1987 as the Gulfstar 55 Motor Yacht, this spacious motor yacht was considered a breakthrough design in the late 1980s for her sophisticated engineering and high-tech construction. Gulfstar was a technology-driven company when Viking acquired it in late 1987, and the 55 was among their most advanced designs. Built on a fully cored hull with moderate transom deadrise, the 55 is noted for her good performance, excellent interior space utilization and woodwork, and—unfortunately—a somewhat noisy master stateroom while underway. Her standard four-stateroom layout (three with double berths) has the main salon/dining area separated from the galley and pilothouse. Notable features include a salon staircase leading up to the flybridge (a big improvement over the normal wheelhouse ladder) and a separate utility room with washer/dryer and workbench. Originally designed with walkaround side decks, the full-width salon layout became standard in 1989, and the Extended Aft Deck model (with a much smaller salon) came out in 1990. Standard 735hp 8V92 diesels cruise the Gulfstar/Viking 55 at 19–20 knots (20+ top). A total of 40 were built.
