The last Roughwater model before the company went out of business in 1989, the Roughwater 42 is an updated version of the earlier Roughwater 41 with increased power, a queen bed in the master stateroom, and a full-size refrigerator in the galley. Like her predecessor, the 42 rides on solid fiberglass semi-displacement hull with a slender beam and a long, prop-protecting keel. A cockpit door in the aft stateroom—and a sliding door in the salon—provide access to the interior, which is configured with the galley and dinette to port in the main salon. A two-part hatch separates the salon from the bow stateroom, and the aft stateroom is fitted with a large head with separate stall shower. Note that a cavernous storage area is located under the galley sole. (Indeed, storage is excellent in this boat.) One of the high points this boat is the excellent helm visibility from her enclosed pilothouse. The 42 was Roughwater’s first “luxury” model, and as such she included a good deal of standard equipment including teak parquet floors, a windlass, and a generator. She’ll cruise at 12 knots with twin 220hp GM diesels and reach a top speed of 15–16 knots.
