42 Convertible

One of the earliest Riviera models introduced into the U.S., the 42 Convertible was marketed as a “…Bertram look-alike, built like a Blackfin and finished like a Hatteras.” In fact, the 42 does look a little like a Bertram, and it’s also true that her construction is very sturdy indeed. Like all Rivieras, she was heavily built on a solid fiberglass semi-V hull with a shallow keel and a collision bulkhead forward. Below, the two-stateroom, single-head floorplan is arranged with a mid-level galley that extends well into the salon. Both staterooms have double berths, and a settee in the passageway converts into over/under bunks—berths for six not counting the convertible salon dinette. Because she comes standard with a lower helm, the front windows are not glassed over (as they are in most American boats), which adds to the impression of space in the salon. The cockpit is large enough for serious fishing pursuits and includes a molded tackle center, walk-in access to the engine room, transom door, and steps at the corners leading to the wide side decks. Among several engine options offered by Riviera, twin 435hp Cat diesels cruise the 42 in the low 20s and reach 26–27 knots wide open.
