42 Sport Fisherman

1975–83

Post 42 Sport Fisherman
With over 230 built during an 8-year production run, the 42 Sport Fisherman remains the best-selling Post ever. She was introduced in 1974 as a replacement for the all-wood Post 40, and shares her predecessor’s handsome Jersey-style profile and quality construction. As a fishing platform, many tournament veterans rank the Post 42 among the best mid-range sportfishermen of her era. Her flat aftersections and flared bow produce a relatively dry boat with good lift and speed as well as excellent low-speed stability. Below, mahogany joinery was standard in early models (a teak interior became optional in 1979), and her two-stateroom layout has the galley down and the owner’s stateroom amidships. An L-shaped settee in the salon converts to a double berth for extra overnight guests. Built on a low-deadrise, solid fiberglass hull, the Post 42 was constructed with a glass-over-wood deck and superstructure until mid-1976. (Note that a solid front windshield became available in 1979.) Nearly all Post 42s were delivered with 310hp 6-71N diesels (18–19 knots cruise/22 knots wide open), or 410hp 6-71s (22–23 knots cruise/26 knots top). For an old boat, resale values remain consistently strong.
