Pearson
38 Convertible
1988–91
Pearson Yachts developed several powerboat designs over the years, and in the early 1960s the Pearson name was no stranger to the powerboat industry. With the downturn of the sailboat market, Pearson once again decided to build powerboats. The first—the 38 Convertible pictured above—was introduced in 1987. She was designed by Hunt Associates and features their famous deep-V hull and a practical two-stateroom floorplan. This is a good-quality family cruiser/fisherman with attractive lines, a soft ride, and upscale interior accommodations. Those who inspected the 38 were often impressed, especially with the well-finished interior and quality construction. Hull construction, mechanical systems, and detailing are generally above average, and the engine room is very large for a boat this size. Additional features included a bow pulpit, wide side decks, transom door, and a swim platform. No racehorse, standard 375hp Caterpillar diesels cruise at a respectable 22–23 knots and deliver a top speed in the neighborhood of 26 knots. Pearson went bankrupt in 1991, thus ending the production of this and all models.
