42 Super Sport
1991–95
The Ocean 42 was one of so-called “new generation” of Super Sport models when she was introduced in the early 1990s. (Note that an earlier Ocean 42 SS model ran from 1980–83.) She has a more streamlined appearance than previous Ocean convertibles, as well as less exterior teak trim and a revised hull with additional transom deadrise (for a better rough-water ride) and a shallower, slightly longer keel. The varnished teak interior of the Ocean 42 is arranged with a walkaround double berth in the bow (master) stateroom, and a double (and slide-out single) berth in the guest stateroom. The galley is forward in the salon, opposite the L-shaped dinette, and a full wet bar is aft, adjacent to the sliding salon door. Note that a hatch in the galley sole leads to a machinery and storage area. Not surprisingly, the cockpit came with a full array of fishing amenities including a bait freezer, transom door, tackle locker and a large in-floor fish box. Additional features include a stylish hardtop, bow pulpit, teak covering boards, and a well-arranged engine room. Twin Caterpillar 425hp diesels were standard (24 knots cruise/27 knots top), and 485hp Detroit 6-71s (26 knots cruise/30 knots top) were optional.
