40+2 Trawler

1978–80

Ocean Yachts 40+2 Trawler
The Ocean 40+2 was Ocean’s attempt at building a trawler—a marketing decision no doubt driven by the fuel crisis of the late 1970s and the resulting surge in trawler sales. The hull design is very unusual—the swim platform is an integral part of the hull (thereby explaining the “40+ 2” model designation), and a unique reverse curve below the waterline at the stern is supposed to aid in getting the boat on plane. Sometimes called a dual mode hull, the 40+2’s bottom is actually a semi-displacement design capable of planing-speed performance. Inside, the all-teak interior is arranged with V-berths forward and twin berths aft—a practical layout for some, but dated by today’s fixation on walkaround double berths. A lower helm and deck access door were standard, and the salon came standard with a convertible sofa and wet bar. Additional features include full walkaround decks, a tub/shower in the aft head, and a functional mast and boom. Most Ocean 40+2 Trawlers were powered with twin 160hp Perkins diesels. The cruising speed is 12–13 knots and the top speed is around 15 knots. About 25 were built.
